“Finishing Strong”
We live in a world of information overload. We’re constantly forced to curate our lives, because we know that if we don’t, someone else will. Those of us who have found our home in creative industries are also learning how to hone our skills, manage our time and coddle the vision that got us here in the first place. So with all of these distractions and opportunities, how do we force ourselves to stay focused and just get the work done?

“Let Us Now Praise Ordinary People”
Everywhere you turn, companies are promising to change the world. But when the people already on top promise to change the world, you have to wonder how and for whom. The how isn’t usually in your benefit, and the for whom isn’t usually for you. The world is working exactly as they’ve designed it to work. So if we really want to change it, we need to change not just how we design it, but who is designing it.
7pm
The Designed by Few design competition is going to be awesome this year! There will be 3 killer designers competing for a cash prize and bragging rights – each wanting to be crowned DxF 2016 victor! We’re also going to have music, food, booze, a Photo Booth, and a halloween costume contest all held at the beautiful 21c Museum Hotel. It’s going to be a blast!

“The Small Town Complex”
As uncannily predicted by Arthur C. Clarke in 1974, today’s abundance of personal computers means us highfalutin designers can live and work wherever we please, including the middle of nowhere. But how many people actually sacrifice city lights for northern lights? Public transportation for personal transformation? This talk is a story about doing just that, about moving homes from a city of six million to a town of ten thousand. It’s about taking risks with real consequences, building something out of nothing, and getting a town to embrace a design culture that’s bigger than its own britches.

“Should design even have a seat at the table?”
Design has been clamoring for a seat at the table for ages. And, all of the sudden it’s happening. Designers at startups and big companies alike are increasingly being brought into leadership discussions. In my job at GV, I see designers across a broad range of companies and I’m very worried that many designers are squandering their leadership opportunity. Let’s talk about how design is perceived by leaders and where design can truly help shape more beautiful companies.
